Safety standards for Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) systems in current use today have been published since 1999. Boyd McKillican will examine the relevant standards and theirinterrelationships. Some of the standards define the acceptable types of designs and architectures for railway electronic and software safety systems that ranging from best practices to legal requirements. The communication between vital processors and how safety responsibility is allocated is critical to the safe operation of a CBTC system. Thedependence on network reliability and availability, as well as cybersecurity, is examined in context. Some example design patterns and processes will illustrate how the standards can be applied.
