Minor Railways Section technical visit to Dean Forest Railway
22 Apr 2023 10:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Section: This technical visit is organised by IRSE Minor Railways Section - please contact the Visits Secretary directly via email at mrsvisits@irse.org

With the kind permission of the Dean Forest Railway (DFR), the IRSE Minor Railways Section is arranging a Technical Visit to view the railway and its signalling on Saturday 22nd April 2023

The innovative train detection system being used on this railway was described at the sections Kidderminster technical seminar on the 16th November 2019. The DFR opened its first 200 yards of track in 1970 with the aim of preserving the last remaining section of the Severn and Wye Railway, they currently operate a 41/2-mile line from Lydney Junction to Parkend with an operating base, cafe and museum at Norchard.

The final details for the day of the technical visit are still under development but are expected to be as follows.:
After registration at 10:55 we will view the signalling at Lydney Junction; then on to a special diesel train and travel from Lydney Junction to Norchard viewing signalling installations on the way. At Norchard there will be a stop to allow time for some refreshment and view the fixed installations and the museum where we are planning a guided tour.
After the stop at Norchard we will continue to Parkend for viewing the signalling there.
The special train will then return to Norchard and Lydney Junction at the end of the visit with a planned arrival time to catch the main line trains. For more information on the DFR see https://deanforestrailway.co.uk/

There is free Car Parking at the railway’s car park at Norchard station and at the car park at Lydney station for which a charge is made. The start time at Lydney Junction will enable travel to Lydney by Cross Country or Transport for Wales connecting services in the morning at the start of the visit. If you park at Norchard you can board the special train at Norchard before its departure to Lydney Junction at 10:30.

There will be a reservation fee £42 for this visit. Anyone who booked and paid for a place on the original visit, much delayed by Covid, should indicate this on the booking form.

PPE in the form of Hi-Vis and strong shoes are advised for this visit.

Please complete the registration form (below in 'downloads') and send it to the Minor Railways Section Visits Secretary at mrsvisits@irse.org
