Great Cockcrow Railway
With the kind permission of the Great Cockcrow Railway, the IRSE Minor Railways Section has arranged a visit to that 7¼” gauge railway on Saturday 6 September 2025.
The railway will not be open to the general public that day, although it will be their “Gala Saturday”. Our visit will commence at 13:00.
This is a most worthwhile visit, as the railway is very much designed to showcase accurate signalling controlled by different styles of signal box. One has miniature levers from Crewe South. Another has a Westinghouse 'L' frame from South Croydon. A third has a Stevens ‘Knee Frame’ from Waterloo on the Waterloo and City Line. There is also a gate box with a simple switch panel.
We have been told that a large number of visiting engines will be running trains all day around “our amazing track” and that the Station Cafe will be open, offering hot and cold drinks, cakes, ice cream, and crisps.
The Railway is located on Hardwick Lane, on the opposite side of the M25 from Chertsey. It is 1.3 miles from Chertsey Station.
Buses operate every 15 minutes on the first 0.8 miles, but there is no pavement for the subsequent ½ mile walk along Hardwick Lane.
There is a taxi office by the level crossing at Chertsey. Taxis are also available from Virginia Water (2½ miles) and Woking (6 miles).
